OLIVIER PAUWELS designs trophy-artwork for MEMORIAL VANDAMME
the Brussels King Baudouin Stadium, Belgium
August 27, 2010
It is obvious that the Belgacom Memorial Van Damme, on August 27th the sixth and final event of the world-famous Diamond League in the Brussels King Baudouin Stadium, has something to do with art. For this years 34th edition the organizer Wilfried Meert provided for a special award for the winner of each event. These athletes will take home with them a unique work of art from the Ostend artist Olivier Pauwels, which will be presented together with the medals at the official honouring of the winners.
In the last few years Olivier Pauwels (°1974) scores more and more internationally and is exclusively represented by the Robinsons Art Gallery in Knokke. Olivier creates reinvestment art and designed The Runner for the Memorial: a sculpture that expresses his own personal view on athletics. His archetype of the complete sportsman. The sculpture is typical of Oliviers work. As usual the work of art is built up around the figure that has become his trademark, a cyberbaby of his very own design. Each work of art is created around that baby and the artist exclusively chooses used materials which he gives a new life.
